Beautify our Zoo

Agency: Zoofari, Inc.
October 4, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
North County Coastal – Carlsbad, 92008

Zoofari is home to over 120 displaced, abandoned, or otherwise non-releasable wild animals. Our mission is to provide the utmost in care for these animals, from vet care and nutrition to socialization and behavioral enrichment. We need your help to beautify our zoo! Volunteers are needed to help with landscaping, painting, and an enclosure enhancement. Landscaping may include clearing weeds from and around grounds, planting donated trees and flowers, general clean-up etc. Painting will include repainting some of our fencing and locks. Enclosure enhancement includes providing a more naturalistic home for our animals, and is a lot of fun to participate in!

The animals housed at Zoofari are brought to local Title 1 schools for environmental and conservation education programs designed for disadvantaged youth. This is a great opportunity provided to students who may never have had a chance to see these animals up close before. Enrichment programs, like the sponsored programs of Zoofari, help children in poverty see beyond their current circumstances and envision careers in science and related fields. Also, it helps make the connection between their daily lives and the lives of the animals that share our planet; we teach about recycling and other conservation efforts, and how that impacts the lives of our animals.

Minimum Volunteer Age: 8 with an adult; 16 without an adult (however, 16 will not be considered an adult to accompany a younger child)

Volunteers Needed: 10-25

Supplies Needed: Volunteers may bring paint brushes, gardening gloves, black spray paint, shovels, and gardening tools.

Additional Notes: Please be sure to wear comfortable and closed toe shoes as the terrain is step and hilly. We will be working outdoors in the heat, so sunscreen and hats are encouraged.

Gardening to Help Grow Self-Respect

Agency: Ivey Ranch Park Association
October 4, from 8:00AM to Noon
Location: North County Coastal – Oceanside, 92057

Volunteers needed to come out to help Ivey Ranch landscape sections of their property. Projects include planting and weeding. The hope is to plant Red Apple ice plant on our embankment. This project will benefit Ivey Ranch visually but also help our programs and the environment. The ice plant will help with soil retention and will save on grounds maintenance as well. Thus, more funds can be put towards serving our participants. Based on volunteer participation, an area of up to 5,000 square feet will be planted.

Ivey Ranch Park Association has served families with and without special needs in North County for 28+ years. Furthermore, our focus stretches further to low-income families. Our programs provide affordable childcare and recreational activities for youth. Families can volunteer with out programs to earn scholarship funds for many of our activities. Our equestrian program offers a therapy and an activity that is usually reserved for the able-bodied or upper class. Ivey Ranch also has a community garden aimed at providing plots to low/fixed income families/individuals.

Minimum Age: 5 with an adult; 14 without an adult

Volunteers Needed: up to 150

Supplies Needed: Volunteers may bring gardening gloves and screwdrivers. We have enough tools for 15-25 people. Beyond that, we need hand-held weeders (looks like a screwdriver with two prongs at the end).

Additional Notes: Volunteers need to wear long pants that they don't mind getting dirty. Closed toe shoes are a must. We will *hopefully* be serving both breakfast and lunch, so come hungry and ready to work.

Ivey Ranch Western Hoedown

The 5th annual Western Hoedown on Sept. 12th, benefiting the Ivey Ranch Park Association programs, is a family event combining the fun of a picnic and the warmth of a country get together. Hoedown attractions include a USMC Mounted Color Guard presentation, horseback riding demonstrations and show, hay rides, kids corral activities, a silent auction, DJ and live music.

Enjoy this fun atmosphere while giving back to the community. As a Western Hoedown volunteer you could entertain kids with western themed activities in the kid's corral, help out with the silent auction, serve food to hungry guests and much more! Funds raised will go a long way to help fund the many children's programs, activities and school operating costs at Ivey Ranch but none of this can happen without volunteer support!
