An historic day for service
Today, President Obama signed the Kennedy Serve America Act. Everyone who volunteers is very excited about the opportunities it will create to elevate and enhance service across the nation and in San Diego.
Tune into KUSI at 7 a.m. Wednesday for their interview with Volunteer San Diego about this momentous occasion or copy and paste the following into your browser to visit:
http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://news.yahoo.com%2Fs%2Fap%2F20090421%2Fap_on_go_pr_wh%2Fus_obama_national_service
President Obama has been calling on Americans to work together -- street by street, town by town -- to tackle our country's biggest challenges.
Yesterday, that service got a lot easier when President Obama signed the Serve America Act, the largest expansion of national service since the creation of the Peace Corps. Yesterday's signing opens up new service opportunities for millions of people across the country.
Visit the White House website to find a service opportunity in your community, and tell us how you're delivering on President Obama's call to service.
Vice President Joe Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton, former First Lady Rosalyn Carter and Senator Ted Kennedy all joined the President at yesterday's signing ceremony.
They all wanted to be among the first to answer the President's call to serve.
Now it's your turn. The Serve America Act triples the size of AmeriCorps over the next eight years, and focuses on our country's toughest challenges -- including clean energy, health care, and education.
It gives students, seniors, and everyone in between the resources to serve. And it strengthens nonprofit organizations to expand opportunities for everyone to pitch in.

URGENTLY NEEDED!
Got 1 hour? Feed Koi! Weed a Garden! Help the Pond!

Our Koi Pond is run entirely by volunteers. The fish and turtles are fed 1X a day in winter and the leaf skimmer basket is emptied and water added to the pond 1X a day. The plants around the pond need love too, thinning and raking and pruning. There's plenty to do on YOUR TIME, YOUR SCHEDULE. We provide all the food and pond supplies and training. We're a fun bunch to work with, and your efforts are MUCH APPRECIATED by everyone!
To find out more about how to help out at the pond, call or email Pete Miles at 760-705-5800 today!
Funeral Reception Ministry

This ministry helps families set up a meal after a funeral to celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Volunteers are needed to help with hospitality, setup and cleanup. Help us welcome and serve grieving families by becoming involved with this rewarding ministry. Our goal is to have many people available to serve on the list for funeral receptions so that the responsibility won't fall on the same folks all the time. The average funeral reception lasts about five hours, and the shift can be split between two people. Training is provided along with written procedures.
Please call Mae Signori at 760- 757-4820 if you are interested in helping out or finding out more.
